Fall is almost here and winter is hot on her tail

                         Are you ready for winter?

Its fall in Alabama. Temps are down into the muggy 90s. Summer is gone.  Yes, we have another couple of months before we PLAN to take a jacket when we go out, but summer is gone for 2019.

Trees are already losing the green from their leaves, spring chickens are beginning to lay eggs, dairy farms are selling bottle-baby calves and we have three hurricanes we are watching develop in the Gulf of Mexico. Don't forget your kids are back in school. (Its easier to program your kids about hating the USA if they only get a short break for summer.)

I, personally hate cold weather, but I have friends who have already shot their first deer since Bow Hunting Season officially opened in parts of the state. My neighbor is chomping at the bit to get a deer that he has been watching for a couple of years.

I am planning to till the garden and plant some cool season things this week.  I am going to try Brussell Sprouts this year, along with the usual turnips and the cover crop of collards. (We might eat a few collards over the winter, but its mostly for "green manure" for the garden.  I have a cotton gin near me and they give away the gin trash for free. You just pull your trailer up to the pile and shovel your day away.  Its better to let it compost through the summer and harvest in the fall/winter. I want to get two trailer loads on the garden this year.

The farmers are "wide open" and working LONG hours to get the final crops in. The smell of peanuts is strong in the air and even the local IGA Grocery store has "green" peanuts ready to boil.  I am already thinking about my Halloween costume....  Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away..  4 more weeks and it is Christmas (NOT X-mas. But that's another post.)

What are you doing to get ready for Fall/Winter?
